Awards & Accomplishments

McMaster's Electrical and Computer Engineering programs were ranked both nationally and internationally as one of the best departments of electrical and computer engineering. This has been achieved through the hardwork and dedication of our members. We are very proud of the accomplishments of our members and the awards and recognition they have received over the years. These include the prestigious Premier Research Excellence Award (PREA), McMaster Students Union Teaching Award, Booker Gold Medal, Signal Processing Society Education Award, and many others.

  • Dr. Jamal Deen has achieved the highest level of excellence at McMaster - a Distinguished University Professorship. Congratulations Jamal!
  • Dr. Jamal Deen has been elected as member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts. He becomes only the 11th Canadian to have received this honour. Congratulations!
  • In recognition of his "demonstrated leadership, innovative pedagogical practices, and distinctive commitment to advancing the improvement of teaching and learning", Tom Doyle has been selected as a 2015 Impact Fellow by the McMaster Institute for Innovation and Excellence in Teaching and Learning (MIIETL). This award will support Tom's development of evidence-based high-impact educational innovations. Congratulations!
  • Dr. Ali Emadi has been selected as the founding Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transaction on Transportation Electrification (TTE). This is the flagship journal of the IEEE Transportation Electrification Initiative.
  • The Faculty of Engineering has chosen Dr. Nicola Nicolici as "Distinguished Engineering Educator". Congratulations Nicola on this wonderful recognition!
  • Three Engineering professors have been recognized by the Faculty as "Distinguished Engineering Professors" - and two of these three are in ECE! Congratulations to Dr. Xiaolin Wu and Dr. Thia Kirubarajan!
  • We have some exceptional educators in our department! Based on the undergraduate teaching evaluations, the following instructors are on the Dean's Teaching Honour Roll: Dr. Shiva Kumar (Eng 2MM3), Dr. Max Wong (Elec Eng 4TK4), for 2 courses Dr. Nicola Nicolici (Comp Eng 3DQ5 and Comp Eng 4DS4), and both Dr. Steve Hranilovic and Dr. Xun Li for Elec Eng 4OI6. Congratulations to you all!
  • Dr. Shahram Shirani has been inducted as a Faculty Leadership Fellow under the Faculty of Engineering's new Faculty Leadership Program. Congratulations Shahram!
  • Dr. Jamal Deen has been elected as the next president of The Academy of Science of the Royal Society of Canada! Congratulations Jamal on this very high honour.
  • Dr. Shahin Sirouspour has been awarded an NSERC Discovery Accelerator Supplement in 2014's NSERC Discovery competition.
  • The Dean of Engineering has established three types of honorific Chairs which recognize excellence within the faculty. Of the 7 positions awarded, 3 have been awarded to ECE faculty members! Thia Kirubarajan and Xiaolin Wu were selected as Distinguished Engineering Professors, and Nicola Nicolici was selected as the Distinguished Engineering Educator. Congratulations on receiving this prestigious recognition!
  • Dr. Tom Luo, Adjunct Professor and former Chair of ECE, has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. Many of us have been inspired by Tom's research insights and his astute mentorship.
  • Dr. John Bandler has been awarded the 2014 Faculty of Engineering Research Achievement Award in recognition of his pioneering work on optimization-based approaches to computer-aided design, and the impact this work has had in applications such as microwave communication systems and vehicular safety
  • Dr. Mike Noseworthy, along with Jeff Fortuna (a former post-doc), Alyaa Elzibak (a PhD student), Zhaoyang Fan (a former Masters student), and John MacGregor (a former member of the Department of Chemical Engineering), has been awarded the 2013 Kowalski prize for the "Best Application Paper" published in the Journal of Chemometrics in 2011 and 2012 for a paper entitled "Liver functional magnetic resonance imaging analysis using a latent variables approach".
  • Dr. Mike Noseworthy received the President's Award for Excellence in Graduate Supervision at the 17th Annual Graduate Students Recognition Day on Sept 6, 2013..
  • Dr. Tom Doyle was awarded a 2013 President's Award for Outstanding Contributions to Teaching & Learning. The award recognizes Tom's development of a "cornerstone" first year project to complement the 4th year capstone project, and his work on assessing the impact of that course.
  • Dr. Jamal Deen was awarded the Faculty of Engineering Research Achievement Award for 2013.
  • Graduate student Sina Naderi Shahi won the Best Student Paper award at the Photonic North Conference in Ottawa in June 2013.
  • Anuja Goyal, Aditi Chemparathy and Akalvizhy Elanko won the Greatest Commercial Potential Award at the McMaster Innovation Showcase Poster Competition in April 2013 for their 4th year design project "Neotrace". "Neotrace" is an inexpensive movement monitoring system for neonates in Neonatal Intensive Care Units.
  • The McMaster Formula Hybrid student team received the First Place GM Best Engineered Hybrid Systems Award at the 2013 Formula Hybrid International Competition held April 29-May 2, 2013. The team also received the IEEE Engineering the Future Award, and several other awards.
  • Dr. John Bandler was awarded the 2013 Microwave Career Award from the IEEE Microwaver Theory and Techniques Society.
  • Dr. Ali Emadi was named as a 2013 ISI Highly Cited Researcher in the field of engineering.
  • Dr. Mike Noseworthy, Jeff Fortuna, Alyaa Elzibak, Zhaoyang Fan, and John MacGregor were awarded the 2013 Kowalski prize for the "Best Application Paper" published in the Journal of Chemometrics in 2011 and 2012 for a paper entitled "Liver functional magnetic resonance imaging analysis using a latent variables approach".
  • Dr. Simon Haykin received the Lifetime Innovator Award from McMaster's Innovation Showcase for his work inventing the field of cognitive radio.
  • Dr. Ian Bruce and Dr. Simon Haykin, joined by Dr. Sue Becker and Dr. Laurel Trainor, won the 2012 Mind to Market Award from the Ontario Centres of Excellence for their neurocompensator algorithm for hearing aids.

  • Dr. Deen was presented with the 2011 IEEE Canada R.A. Fessenden Award on May 9 at the 24th Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering held in Niagara Falls. More here, 2011.
  • Dr. Jamal Deen is the recipient of the 2011 Electronics and Photonics Division (EPD) Award from the Electrochemical Society. Congrats! More info here, 2011.
  • Dr. Mohamed Bakr has been awarded an NSERC Discovery Accelerator Supplement (DAS) valued at $120K over three years, 2011.
    • The NSERC DAS Program provides significant funding to a small number of outstanding researchers who have a well-established research program, and who show strong potential to become international leaders in their area of research.
    • Congratulations to Mohamed for this recognition of his outstanding research work in ECE!
  • Dr. Ho Fai (Henry) Ko is the 2010 winner of the European Design and Automation Association (EDAA) outstanding PhD dissertation award. More info here. Way to go Henry! 2010.

  • Congratulations to Dr. Tim Davidson who has been awarded an NSERC Discovery Accelerator Supplement. The research award is worth $120,000 over 3 years. Well done Tim! 2009.
  • Dr. Jamal Deen was presented with a technology achievement award by the Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce at its annual awards gala on June 6 in Toronto. More details here, 2009.
  • Shahin Sirouspour has been awarded the 2008 President's Award of Excellence in Graduate Supervision. Congrats from all your friends in ECE! 2008.
  • Congratulations go to Cheryl Gies for being awarded with the Graduate Students Association Award for Contributions by Non-Academic Staff, as well as Terry Greenlay Manager - Facilities, Electrical & Computer Engineering, who won the President's Award. Way to go from all your friends in ECE! 2008.
  • VitaSound Audio, which manufactures hearing aid devices using technology licensed from McMaster, has been named one of three winners of the second annual Innovations@Work Awards. Some of these devices are based on neurocompensator-based hearing aid advancements developed by McMaster research teams led by Associate Member Sue Becker, professor of psychology, neuroscience and behaviour, along with Simon Haykin and Ian Bruce.   • Jamal Deen, professor of electrical and computer engineering at McMaster, has been elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS).  He is the first engineering professor at McMaster to receive this recognition. More here, 2008.
