Financial Support

Graduate Assistantships

The Department awards graduate assistantships to all qualified full-time graduate students. These are approximately $18,000 for Canadian and landed immigrants and $25,000 per annum for international students (to cover differential tuition fees) and are normally held for up to 24 months for Masters students and 48 months for Ph.D. students. Outstanding graduate students earn significantly higher stipends depending on their research and academic performance. Stipends are usually funded from research grants or contracts held by individual faculty members, graduate scholarships, tuition assistantships or bursaries.

Graduate students might be eligible for scholarships and/or fellowships from sources outside the department. These include Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Scholarship, Ontario Graduate Scholarships (OGS), and Ontario Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology (OGSST). Currently the scholarship from NSERC is $17,300 for Master’s students and $19,100 for Ph.D. students. The amount for OGS and OGSST is $15,000 per year for both Master’s and Ph.D. students. Students holding any external scholarships will receive significant top-up bursaries. More information about fellowships and bursaries is available from the School of Graduate Studies.

Teaching Assistantships

Graduate students who work as teaching assistants are paid around $31 per hour. Usually, units of 130 hours each are granted to qualified students.
