McMaster University

Scholarships & Awards

GENERAL INFORMATION

  • In addition to the specific scholarship information below, for information on various School of Graduate Studies scholarships refer here , and for information on various Undergraduate scholarships & awards refer here.
  • Eligibility: Before starting your application or submitting any material, please check the eligibility requirements of the particular award you are interested in. Ineligible applicants will NOT be considered.
  • Transcripts:
    • Official transcripts are required from ALL post-secondary institutions that you have attended. This includes not only undergraduate & graduate work, but also any credits obtained by Letter of Permission, credits obtained and used as a Transfer Credit at McMaster, or any other university credit obtained.
    • Even if you are a new student and have no grades on your transcript yet, we require your official transcript because it verifies that you are a currently registered student.
    • Make sure that the current session is showing on your transcripts before ordering or submitting them.
    • If your transcript does not show a grade from your most recently completed term, contact the department. If your transcript does not show a change of grade that you expected, contact the instructor immediately. If the instructor cannot submit the grade change in time to show on your transcript, ask them for an official letter stating the change. That letter must accompany your application / set of official transcripts.
    • Order your official transcripts EARLY (please allow sufficient time for processing and mailing). Official transcripts NOT submitted by the deadline date will make your application incomplete and inadmissible.
    • Order your official transcripts through the Mosaic Student Centre (My Academics).
    • Official transcripts should be mailed to ITB-A111 (as per particular award instructions). If you intend on personally submitting your official transcript with your application (picking it up from the Registrar's Office), you must request a "Sealed Envelope" for it. Do NOT open this envelope (transcripts handled by the student will not be accepted).
    • In application processes where you are to upload your transcript online: in addition to the official transcript for us, you will need a copy of your official transcript for yourself. This should be ordered at the same time as the transcript for us, so that they contain identical information. Please note that we will not accept transcripts that have been directly handled by the student because there is the risk that the transcript may have been tampered with (we can only accept those in a sealed envelope or directly sent to us).
    • More transcript information can be found here.

NSERC USRA (Undergraduate Student Research Awards)

Summer 2017

  • Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRA) are intended to stimulate your interest in research in the natural sciences and engineering. They are also meant to encourage undergraduate students to undertake graduate studies and pursue a research career in these fields. If you would like to gain research work experience that complements your studies in an academic setting, these awards can provide you with financial support. The award is for a period during the summer of 16 consecutive weeks, on a full-time basis.
  • To be eligible to apply for an award you must: be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada; be registered in a Bachelor's degree program at an eligible university; and have obtained over the previous years of study a cumulative average of at least "B-" (7 out of 12 ; 70%). Check for full eligibility details on the link below.
  • Students interested in taking advantage of this paid research program during the summer must first approach a professor with whom they would like to do research with. The research should be discussed, and the professor would have to agree to "hire" the student. Once an agreement has been reached, the student then begins the application process. Students apply to the department that the supervising professor is affiliated with (not necessarily the department that the student is in). Only ONE application can be submitted.
  • Order official transcripts through the Mosaic Student Centre (My Academics). Order one for yourself for uploading to the NSERC application site, and one to include with the hard copy of the application package (either sent to us directly, or brought to us by you in a sealed envelope). Please ensure that all grades from your most recent Term are showing on these transcripts prior to uploading/submitting. If a grade is not showing up, please contact the department office.
  • To apply for these awards, you must complete your application using NSERC's On-line System. Log-in to their system to complete the application (handwritten applications will not be accepted). Submit your application AND pdf's of your transcript/s ON-LINE.
  • Also, after submitting your on-line application, you must provide us with a hard copy of your complete application package: one set of the application forms part 1 & part 2 ; and your transcript/s (as per the information at the top of this page). Please do not staple anything together.
  • Your complete hardcopy application package must be submitted to Kelly in ITB-A111 by 4:00pm on February 9, 2017. NO exceptions. Your on-line application must have been finalized by this time too.
