  • Dr. Jamal Deen has been elected as the next president of The Academy of Science of the Royal Society of Canada! Congratulations Jamal on this very high honour.
  • A gold medal in the 2015 Pan-Am Games has been awarded to a recent alumnus of ECE for his efforts in the Team Sprint track cycling event. Congratulations Joseph Veloce!
  • McMaster's ECO Car team has had outstanding success in the recent ECO Car Competitions in the US. Congratulations!
  • Congratulations to the McMaster Formula Hybrid Team on their success in the 2015 Formula Hybrid Competition held at the New Hampshire Speedway in April 2015. The team received the GM Best Engineered Hybrid System Award, and the IEEE Engineering the Future Award, and were second overall! An outstanding achievment by a truly interdisciplinary team.
  • ECE students Ephrem Chemali and Lucas McCurlie won 2nd place in the 2014 MATLAB and Simulink Design Challenge with their battery balancing project! Congratulations!
  • Dr. Shahin Sirouspour has been awarded an NSERC Discovery Accelerator Supplement in this year's NSERC Discovery competition. Congratulations!
  • Tom Luo, Adjunct Professor and former Chair of ECE, has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. Many of us have been inspired by Tom's research insights and his astute mentorship. Congratulations on this richly deserved honour!
  • The Dean of Engineering has established three types of honorific Chairs which recognize excellence within the faculty. Of the 7 positions awarded, 3 have been awarded to ECE faculty members! Thia Kirubarajan and Xiaolin Wu were selected as Distinguished Engineering Professors, and Nicola Nicolici was selected as the Distinguished Engineering Educator. Congratulations on receiving this prestigious recognition!
  • Dr. John Bandler has been awarded the 2014 Faculty of Engineering Research Achievement Award in recognition of his pioneering work on optimization-based approaches to computer-aided design, and the impact this work has had in applications such as microwave communication systems and vehicular safety. Congratulations!
  • It is our pleasure to announce that our Industry Professor, Dr. Hassan Kojori, has been elevated to IEEE Fellow effective Jan 1, 2014, for his "contributions to the design and application of predictive and diagnostic algorithms in power electronics converters". Congratulations!
  • A new building for Engineering! Construction is expected to take place Spring 2015 to July 2016 for the ExCEL Building - Engineering Centre of Experimental Learning. Thanks to many financial donors, including alumnus Gerald Hatch who gifted the final $3 million.
  • Dr. Mike Noseworthy, along with Jeff Fortuna (a former post-doc), Alyaa Elzibak (a PhD student), Zhaoyang Fan (a former Masters student), and John MacGregor (a former member of the Department of Chemical Engineering), has been awarded the 2013 Kowalski prize for the "Best Application Paper" published in the Journal of Chemometrics in 2011 and 2012 for a paper entitled "Liver functional magnetic resonance imaging analysis using a latent variables approach". Congratulations to all!
  • Chrysler has partnered with the McMaster Automotive Resource Centre (MARC) to develop high-performance electric and hybrid powertrains at our Longwood Road facility.
  • Dr. Mike Noseworthy received the President's Award for Excellence in Graduate Supervision at the 17th Annual Graduate Students Recognition Day on Sept 6, 2013. Congratulations Mike!
  • Dr. Steve Hranilovic, the Associate Chair of ECE, is featured in an article on deep space laser communication in the September 2013 issue of IEEE Spectrum! Congratulations!
  • Dr. Tom Doyle has been awarded a 2013 President's Award for Outstanding Contributions to Teaching & Learning! The award recognizes Tom's development of a "cornerstone" first year project to complement the 4th year capstone project, and his work on assessing the impact of that course. Congratulations Tom!
  • Walter Butler, who in 1970 became McMaster's first student to graduate with a PhD in Electrical Engineering, has been inducted into the McMaster Alumni Gallery (an award conferred upon those who have proven themselves to be leaders, innovators, contributors and global citizens). Walter is co-holder of 30 patents and has published more than 30 technical papers. Congratulations Walter!
  • Congratulations to Anuja Goyal, Aditi Chemparathy and Akalvizhy Elanko, whose fourth year design project "Neotrace" won the Greatest Commercial Potential Award at the McMaster Innovation Showcase Poster Competition. NeoTrace is an inexpensive movement monitoring system for neonates in Neonatal Intensive Care Units.
  • We are pleased to announce that McMaster's Formula Hybrid student team received the First Place GM Best Engineered Hybrid Systems Award at the 2013 Formula Hybrid International Competition, which was held at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway from April 29 - May 2.   • Dr. Wei-Ping Huang has been selected to be the next Dean of the School of Information Science and Technology at Shandong University in China (his alma mater). He will also be serving as Chief Scientist of HiSense Co. Dr. Huang has been a faculty member in the ECE Department for 14 years. With hearty congratulations, we wish Dr. Huang all the best!
  • It is our pleasure to announce that John Bandler has been selected as the recipient of the 2013 Microwave Career Award from the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society. This award recognizes an individual for a career of meritorious achievement and outstanding technical contribution in the field of microwave theory and techniques.
  • Ali Emadi has been named as a 2013 ISI Highly Cited Researcher in the field of engineering. Congratualtions Ali!

  • Two Honorary Degrees are being presented by the Faculty of Engineering at this year's Convocation (June 12, 2013). Both recipients are ECE alumni! Chandra Kudsia (a world leader in engineering technologies for satellite communication and aeronautics) and Robert Walker (president and chief executive officer of Atomic Engergy Canada Limited). The ECE Department is very proud of the achievements of these two highly successful engineers - they are truly an inspiration! Congratulations to Chandra and Robert!
  • Graduate student Sina Naderi Shahi won the Best Student Paper award at the Photonic North Conference, held in Ottawa June 2-5, 2013. Congratulations Sina!

  • An interdisciplinary team of McMaster students has been selected as one of only 8 finalist teams to participate in the prestigious 2013 International Future Energy Challenge. The team, supervised by Professor Ali Emadi, includes ECE students Haizhong Ye (PhD student), Adam Kliber (Undergraduate), Kavya Divakaria (Masters), Rex Zhang (Undergraduate), Haoyu Li (Undergraduate), and Parampreet Toor (Masters). The major sponsor of the team is the Canada Excellence Research Chair in Hybrid Powertrain Program. Final competition will take place on July 18-19 in Columbus, Ohio, USA. Congratulations to all involved!
  • Professor Jamal Deen has been awarded the Faculty of Engineering Research Achievement Award for 2013. Congratulations Jamal!
  • The department is pleased to announce that Dr. Ali Emadi has been elevated to IEEE Fellow for "contributions to electric power conversion and control for electric and hybrid vehicles". Congratulations Ali!
  • McMaster's Innovation Showcase recognized Dr. Simon Haykin with the Lifetime Innovator Award. Dr. Haykin was honoured for his work inventing the field of cognitive radio. Congratulations!
  • We are excited to announce that an interdisciplinary research team consisting of members of the ECE Department, members of the Department of Psychology, Neuroscience and Behaviour, and VitaSound Audio Inc. have won the 2012 Mind to Market Award from the Ontario Centres of Excellence for their neuro-compensator algorithm for hearing aids. We congratulate the academic members of the team: Sue Becker, Simon Haykin, Ian Bruce and Laurel Trainor, and the leadership of VitaSound, especially CEO Gora Ganguli.
  • Dr. Tim Davidson has been appointed as the new Chair of the ECE Department! His new post commences July 1, 2012, for a period of 5 years. Congratulations!

  • Dr. Mohamed Bakr has been awarded an NSERC Discovery Accelerator Supplement (DAS) valued at $120K over three years.
    • The NSERC DAS Program provides significant funding to a small number of outstanding researchers who have a well-established research program, and who show strong potential to become international leaders in their area of research.
    • Congratulations to Mohamed for this recognition of his outstanding research work in ECE!

  • ECE's Jim Reilly, Hubert de Bruin, and Ahmad Khodayari-Rostamabad, as well as Dr. Hasey, have applied machine learning to EEG patterns and successfully predicted how patients with schizophrenia would respond to clozapine therapy. More info here.
  • ECE's post doc, Peter Bevan is spotlighted in the Hamilton Spectator for receiving funding through the Government of Canada's new Elevate program with MITACS Inc. Also receiving funding were ECE's Peter Basl and Li Liu. More info here.
  • Congrats go to Team "Robot Unicorn Attack" after the 2010 International Autonomous Robot Competition at U. of Windsor for placing 1st in the Drag Race and 3rd in the Circuit Race. The team representing McMaster was Mike Irvine, Bryan House, Dan Kish, Emily Bot and Danny Vacar.

  • It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Arthur Gladwin. Dr. Gladwin was a long time faculty member of ECE. He served as the first Department Chair in the early sixties and retired in 1975. More here.

The project uses the Altera DE2 board to convert images from two different cameras into one 3D image. Good luck from all of ECE!

  • VitaSound Audio, which manufactures hearing aid devices using technology licensed from McMaster, has been named one of three winners of the second annual Innovations@Work Awards. Some of these devices are based on neurocompensator-based hearing aid advancements developed by McMaster research teams led by Associate Member Sue Becker, professor of psychology, neuroscience and behaviour, along with Simon Haykin and Ian Bruce.
