Lab Safety

Laboratory Safety:

Some laboratories have equipment which can be dangerous if not used properly. Equipment-specific safety and operational instructions will take place during your first lab utilizing that equipment. If you have any questions regarding safe use of a specific piece of equipment, please ask your TA before you even turn it on.

  • Specific information regarding safety will be provided in each laboratory.
  • Basic safety information for all ECE labs can be found here.
  • Please click here to complete the ECE Lab Safety quiz every term.

Soldering Safety:

Students wishing to construct circuits by soldering must follow this procedure (please note that soldering is only permitted in the IEEE Student Branch room ITB-141).

  • View the soldering training video and successfully complete the online quiz here.
  • Go to the IEEE Student Branch in ITB-141 for practical soldering & hot air reflow training and test.
  • Obtain an ECE Soldering Certification card (to be renewed annually).

After these steps, students can solder their circuits in the IEEE Student branch by presenting their McMaster Student Card along with the ECE Soldering Certification card.

Soldering certification must be renewed each academic year.
