Course Objectives:

To develop knowledge on the operating principles, the design methodologies, the analyzing and the laboratory (simulation and measurement) techniques of analog and mixed-signal electronic circuits.

Laboratory Experiments

Lab. 1: Active Filter Circuits [3 hours]

Goals: This laboratory demonstrates the basic operation of active filter circuits built on operational amplifiers, characterizes gain, time and frequency domain responses, compares with theoretical results.

Lab. 2: Oscillator and Its Applications [3 hours]

Goals: This laboratory demonstrates the basic operation of oscillator circuits and its application in PLL for frequency conversions, characterizes open and close loop gains, input and output resistances, compares with theoretical results.

Lab. 3: DA and AD Converters [3 hours]

Goals: This laboratory demonstrates the principles of DA, AD converters and their applications, tests successive approximation algorithm in ADC, conversion accuracy and interfacing requirements, compares weighted-resistor and R-2R ladder algorithms in DAC, compares experimental data with theoretical results.

Lab. 4: Multistage Amplification Circuits [3 hours]

Goals: This laboratory demonstrates the principles of wide band multistage amplifier circuits built on BJTs, characterizes gain, input and output resistances, compares with theoretical results.

Course Format

Full class sessions (38 hours):                   3 hours per week for 13 weeks
Tutorial sessions (10 hours):                     1 hour per week for 10 weeks (starting from the 2nd week)
Laboratory sessions (12 hours):                3 hours every other week for 8 weeks (starting from the 4th week)
Pre-lab. preparations (8 hours):                2 hours every other week for 8 weeks (starting from the 4th week)
Assignments (24 hours):                           6 hours every other week for 8 weeks
Study time (65 hours):                              5 hours per week for 13 weeks
Total loading:                                            ~12 hours per week

Assessment

Laboratory:     20% (4 labs, each laboratory has 5 points, total 20 points)
Assignment:    16% (4 assignments, each assignment has 4 points, total 16 points)
Midterm:         14% (2 questions, each has 7 points, total 14 points)
Final exam:     50% (5 questions, each has 10 points, total 50 points)
Statistical adjustment will not be used.
