(1) Do a literature survey of dispersion induced limitations to optical transmission systems. Write a program to simulate the impact of 2nd and 3rd order dispersion on a pulse. Use a 32 bit pseudo random sequence as input bit pattern and develop an eye diagram/ constellation diagrams. Use different modulation formats such as QPSK and 16-QAM. Find the impact of dispersion compensating fibers.
(2) Do a literature survey on coherent communication systems. Discuss various techniques to compensate for phase noise and fiber dispersion using DSP in coherent systems.
(3) Do a literature survey of OFDM systems. Write a matlab code to simulate optical OFDM systems.
(4) Do a literature survey on the optical implementation of modulation formats such as QPSK, DPSK, DQPSK modulation formats. Write a matlab code to implement these formats and compare the BER (numerical and analytical, when possible) for a typical fiber-optic transmission systems.
(5) Do a literature survey on few mode fibers. Discuss MIMO systems based on few mode fibers. Write a matlab code to implement a MIMO system based on few mode fibers.
(6) Do a literature survey of photon crystal fibers. Write a matlab code to find the modes of a photon crystal fibers and discuss your results.
(7) Do a literature survey on erbium doped fiber amplifier. Write a program to simulate an erbium doped fiber amplifier with realistic noise. Assume a specific input bit pattern, say 01101101 and show the signal before and after amplification.
(8) Make a comparative study of photo-detectors such as PIN and APD. Write a program to calculate SNR degradation due to shot noise and thermal noise.
(9) Make a literature survey on semiconductor lasers. Write a program to implement laser rate equations.
(10) Make a literature survey on Raman amplifiers. Write a matlab code to implement Raman amplifier. Compare Raman amplifier and EDFA.
(11) Make a literature survey on polarization mode dispersion (PMD). Develop expressions for BER due to PMD.
(12) Do a literature survey on solitons. Develop a code to simulate nonlinear Schrodinger equation and show solitons solutions.
