The laboratories will be held in ITB A114.
Please attend the session that corresponds to your registration in the course.
The labs in this course have been developed with the principles of "self-directed learning" in mind. As such, you will need to design the experiments that you will perform in the lab, not merely follow instructions. Therefore, it is critical that the pre-lab work is performed diligently.
Please note that in order to qualify for a positive mark for this course, you must personally complete all laboratories. This rule is applied to all students in the class, and hence includes those who are repeating the course.
The laboratory experiments will be performed in groups of two.
You will need to purchase a laboratory note book for your pre-lab work and your laboratory write-ups. You will need one note book per group. Please make sure that the name and student number of both members of the group is on the note book. The book store sells some appropriate note books, but note books from other sources are also acceptable.
At the beginning of the lab, your pre-lab work will be assessed. You will not be allowed to commence your experiments until your plan has been approved. A fraction of the marks for the laboratory will be allocated to the pre-lab component.
During the laboratory you will perform a sequence of self-designed experiments. To obtain the marks for each experiment, you will need to demonstrate the experiment to a TA.
Before 4:30pm of the second business day following your lab you should submit your lab report. This should be written in your laboratory note book. You will submit your report in the appropriate "drop-box" in the lab (ITB A114). A fraction of the total marks for the lab will be allocated to the lab report.
Your lab book will be available for pick up in the lab the business day after submission. In an attempt to maintain a chain of custody for the lab books, your book will only be available for pick up between 2:30pm and 4:30pm. If you are unable to pick up the lab book during that time, it will also be available in the lab between 2:30pm and 4:30pm the next business day. If you are able to pick up your lab book in a timely fashion, you will have at least 46 hours to complete your pre-lab for the next lab.
