McMaster University

Department History

Electrical Engineering began in 1958 at McMaster University and quickly grew in response to the increasing demand for high quality graduates. In 1977, and for the first time in Canada, the department started the Computer-Engineering program. In conjunction with the school of Business, the department for the first time in Canada established the Electrical Engineering and Management and Computer Engineering and Management programs in 1975 and 1983 respectively.

The department remains the only department in Canada offering these well-recognized programs. Moreover, the department was the first to establish the five-year programs in Electrical Engineering and Society and Computer Engineering and Society (in 1996).

The Electrical Engingeering program has been accredited since 1965. Computer Engineering has been accredited since 1981. Electrical & Biomedical Engineering, ECE's youngest program, has been accredited since 2006.
